Scud, Schrab, Silverman, and Posen

Saturday, July 28, 2007

I have just returned from San Diego Comicon 2007 and it was bittersweet. I had a great time. I got to see the unveiling of the new Iron Man armor for the upcoming movie. Stan Lee brushed by me. The Smallville panel was cool. The Animation Show was a blast. Best of all, though, was my last-minute decision to sit in on the Sarah Silverman panel. To give a little background I have picked up comics on and off for over twenty years now (wow!), but in all that time one comic has stood out above all the others and remains my favorite to this day, even though as it reached it's penultimate climax the series disappeared off the face of the Earth leaving me and everyone else hanging (bummer). Rob Schrab, the creator Scud the Disposable Assassin, left the midwest for Hollywood and is now directing of all things -the Sarah Silverman Show. If I could meet one person in comics this was him and I actually got to get up and ask him, "Hey, where's the rest of my story, pal?!" Okay, so it was a lot nicer than that and Sarah was actually pretty psyched that I asked about Scud, but he said that the rest of the issues are on their way out very soon and then he exclaimed, "...and nobody else knows what I'm talking about..." After the panel was done, I got to talk to Sarah's sister, Laura and Brian Posen. When I mentioned to Brian that my friend and I sat behind him and Patton Oswalt at Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and that it was obvious that they weren't enjoying it, he was like, "Cool...yeah, that movie sucked!" After I finished talking to Brian I caught up with Rob as he was taking off and I told him what a big fan I was and he asked me if I was coming back on Sunday. I said I wasn't sure, but he said if I do to come to the Image Comics booth. That he had some posters there and that he'd autograph some stuff for me. Unfortunately, by Sunday I was dead broke and as much as I was dying to catch up with Rob at the booth, there was just no way it was going to happen. It was heartbreaking.
Overall it was a cool experience, but that last little bit just ate away at me all the way home. Well, what can you do, right? Oh, and Sarah accidentally got punched in the face by a guy wearing a Hellboy fist and he got snatched up by security so hard that he was literally pulled out of his shoes and it broke up the party. Ass...
