Better late than never

Tuesday, November 30, 2004

My Thanksgiving this year was pretty much all but non-existent. I had a bowl of Campbell's chicken noodle soup and a pepsi (very festive). That was fine with me, though. Mike and Amanda went to her uncle's for most of the day to have dinner with them, so I was pretty much by myself for the bulk of the day. I just kicked back and relaxed. I DID miss being back home with the people that I would usually see this time of year. A few people from work invited me over to celebrate with their families, but that's just awkward. But, in the end, I will not have gone without my turkey dinner. Tonight, Amanda made us a nice post-Thanksgiving dinner with all the extras. We barely fit it all on the table. It was really good. I couldn't eat another bite if I tried. Anyway, I just thought it was a really sweet gesture. That's all.

Oh, one more thing, Pauley Shore was in work sitting around for about a half an hour or more last night and girls were going crazy for him. He actually had a small group of girls asking him to sign their clothing and a shoe. What's that all about? It's Pauley Freakin' Shore! I don't get it...

On the job straining...

Saturday, November 20, 2004

Today was SO busy at work. I guess people are starting to get antsy for the holidays. Radio Disney set up post outside of the store and had a karaoke contest for the kids. It's actually an ongoing contest that progresses each week for a trip to New York or something and possibly a recording deal. Jason Shwartzman was in today, so that part was pretty cool. He is so much tinier than I would have imagined. I wanted to talk to him, but before I could I got called back inside to deal with a problem. When I got there....There was no problem! After that he was gone. Oh, well.

When I got home from work I decided to start going through some of my boxes that I hadn't touched since I've been here. Actually, I hadn't opened them for quite a while before that. I came across some old letters and cards that I've saved over the years, being the vicious packrat that I am. Most of them were from girls I've known in the past. It really got me thinking about things...

You know what? Maybe this is something for another time.

Just another day

Wednesday, November 17, 2004

I don't really have much to say. Last night at work I saw Lindy Booth from the new Dawn of the Dead movie. She was in the store with some guy for a while. Other than that, I'm trying to find an Intuos graphics pad and pen that I can afford, to help me with my animation and comic projects. Until then I guess I'll keep doing it the hard way.

Sorry...I was on the other line.

Monday, November 15, 2004

So, It's been quite a few days. What's happened? Well, my roommate Chuck moved out and went back to Michigan. His last few days kept me up quite a bit (from Tuesday to Friday I had slept a total of about ten hours). I dropped him off at LAX Friday morning. He's going to spend a month backpacking Europe and then hang out in China for a bit, just because. Now with Chuck gone I have a lot of free time on my hands. So, that's...something.

With Chuck gone I had to eat dinner by myself Friday night (well, I didn't have to, but I did). I decided to go to Sizzler, which I had been wanting to do since I got to California. No reason...I just wanted to. Mmmmm-mmmmm, that was a mistake. To begin with, I was served a 'four-bean soup' with no beans in it, but a lot of carrots and potatoes. For my meal I ordered a rib-eye steak. Whatever I received, it wasn't anything resembling a rib-eye and man, was it tough (and sans eye)! For a bread you get a basket of 'cheesy-bread'. The whole time I was eating the first piece, I was trying to figure out it's very particular taste. It took me a piece and a half, but I finally placed it. Their 'cheesy-bread' was nothing more than Cheese Nips crushed and seered onto the bread with butter. Is that messed-up or what? I didn't even finish half of my meal before I just got up and walked out. For the $18+ I wasted there, I could have enjoyed a really good meal somewhere else. Chalk that one up to experience, I guess.

All weekend was just work -blah, blah, blah. Today, though, Ted Danson and his daughter were in. He was such a cool person -very personable and friendly. He was talking to everyone like there was nothing that he would rather be doing. He seemed like just an all around great guy. An actress was in earlier, too. I can not for the life of me remember what roles I've seen her in, but I recognized her right away. After helping her, she said I was "just such a nice person". She's an older red-haired lady...usually plays fairly reserved roles (I'll think of one eventually).

I am currently working on character sketches for a 15 minute short I'm going to be doing sometime in the near future. I hope to have it done by the end of the year, but I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of trial and error. I'll post up some of my sketches for it once I have it all laid out and ready to start animating.

Well, that's about where I am right now, besides fixing some of the links in my posts that have decided to stop working. Talk to you soon.

The Incredibles

(View trailer for Pixar's The Incredibles)

Pixar has done it again with The Incredibles, one of it's last collaborations with Disney (which will end with the film
Cars , due out November 2005). After consistently taking a supporting role in Pixar's previous films, humans finally move to the forefront just in time to save the day. The story follows the once legendary Mr. Incredible and ElastiGirl (voiced by Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter , respectively) now domesticated and retired from the 'superheroing' business and raising two and a half very special children of their own. Incredible is a sympathetic insurance agent who longs for a time when he made a real difference in the world and ElastiGirl is more than content being a loving housewife and a mother to their children. Life is mediocre at best, until trouble befalls the family through the machinations of the movie's antagonist -the anti-villain, Syndrome (played by the man, Jason Lee ). The story is well paced, and full of action and laughs just as you'd expect from Pixar. When it comes to the fight scenes, the movements roll seamlessly and there are no punches pulled for the little ones in the audience (Parents beware -when things blow up, people don't float to the ground with parachutes a la G.I. Joe. They just go boom!). Throw in Samuel L. Jackson as faithful friend and hero, Frozone, and you have yourself a well-rounded cast and quite an entertaining movie. It's going to seem like an eternity before I will be able to add this film to my DVD collection!
I would have to say that the movie had only two downfalls: The usually delightful short presented before any Pixar feature was replaced by...I don't know what, but
Boundin' was a far cry from the usual whetting of the appetite that we've come to expect. The second being that the now lackluster name of Disney has been slapped onto it's package, once again taking partial credit from the company that has created the ONLY successful endeavors to be released by Disney in years (with the exception of Pirates of the Caribbean), and destroying any chance of Pixar making the successful run of sequels and off-shoots that this movie has created the potential for (Disney has kept the rights to Pixar's Toy Story characters and is already planning out two more, most likely inferior sequels, sans Pixar Studios). It's a shame really, but what else would you expect from...nevermind.
If you love what Pixar has done thus far or just like superhero movies, you will love The Incredibles. I highly recommend it.

I ♥ Huckabees

(View trailer for I ♥ Huckabees)

Well, I finally got a chance to see I ♥ Huckabees last night. I was originally supposed to see it the week it came out, but the reviews were just coming in and they weren't very flattering (since when do I listen to critics?). At the time it was only playing at the Arclight in Hollywood and one Loew's Theater in New York. That's no longer the case, but I still went to the Arclight to see it(where I saw Sally Kellerman and an Asian actress, who's name I can't remember). I'm kind of getting off the point, though. The story is an existential comedy that snowballs through multiple people's lives, starting with Jason Shwartzman's character, Albert, who hires two 'existence investigators' (played by Duston Hoffman and Lily Tomlin) to uncover the truth about a coincidence in his life that seems to be preoccupying his mind. There are some good laughs and some interesting plotlines, but at times the story gets a bit convoluted and the characters DO get a little monotonous. Some of you may really enjoy the movie, but I have a feeling most will have a bit of a problem keeping up with the plotlines or relating to the characters enough to keep your interest. Would I recommend it? Probably not. Would I watch it again? Probably, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it.

Billy's Balloon

Thursday, November 04, 2004

For those of you who love a good, twisted cartoon...actually, I'm not sure if there are words to describe Billy's Balloon, but I hope you enjoy it as much we all have. It's a student film from a guy by the name of Don Hertzfeldt (Bitter Films.com). Good stuff. (It may take a second to open, but it's worth the wait)
