WICKED

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

After five years of waiting I finally went to see Wicked last night at the Pantages Theatre in downtown Hollywood and I must say that I was not disappointed. For the few of you who may not know the story of Wicked, it basically paints the relationship between Glinda -Good Witch of the North and Elphaba -Wicked Witch of the West before they became the characters that we all know from The Wizard of Oz; from their first encounter in school to Elphaba's watery end. The whole production was so enchanting that you just get lost in what's going on. The main character of Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West) was played by the understudy, Marcie Dodd, instead of Teal Wicks who is the current name to that role and I don't know if that made a difference in the performance or not, but I wouldn't mind going back to see if Teal brings anything more substantial to the character. As much as I was enthralled in the story of Elphaba's transformation from young outcast to wicked witch, I have to say that Erin Mackey stole the show for me with a hilarious turn as Glinda (the youngest in the history of the show). Her physicality and the tone of her delivery was just so over the top that I got to the point where I would laugh just seeing her. The whole cast was fantastic and it was just such an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend going to see it if you get the chance. ---What are you waiting for? GO! NOW!
